New Q4 Whitepaper: Public Company Use of Social Media For Investor Relations – Part 2 Facebook

Over the last few years, Q4 Web Systems has performed research and analysis of public company use of social media for Investor Relations, producing several whitepapers and providing numerous examples of best practices.

In this second part in our 2012 series of whitepapers (download the new Facebook whitepaper) concerning public company use of social media for Investor Relations (the first addressed Twitter) we have found that Facebook continues to be a popular channel ? with 40% of companies in our study using it to provide investor-related material.

While Twitter remains the most used social channel for IROs, Facebook is by far the largest social network, with well over 900 million users worldwide, and as such, there is room for significant growth for IROs.

Facebook introduced some format changes earlier this year, which provide companies with more flexibility in terms of how they post, group and highlight information. As comfort levels with the new Timeline format increase, it is likely that we?ll see companies making more sophisticated use of these tools, making it easier for visitors to find the investor-related material they need through Facebook.

The increase in adoption of and engagement with Facebook shows that companies are beginning to have a better understanding of its users, and to see it as a viable channel to connect with investors. Once thought to be primarily used only by a young demographic, studies have shown the average Facebook user is 38 years old, and the highest growth demographic is the over 45 set.

In spring this year, we added a further 178 to our list of companies being tracked, bringing our total research sample size to over 800 public companies.
